Browsing interface
==================
Many hypertext systems use a mouse for selecting information for
detailed exploration. However, I prefer "arrow key browsing" of
information, for the following reasons:
(1) Arrow keys are faster than moving a mouse <link11>
(2) Arrow keys are familiar to most computer users <link34>
(3) Arrow keys require less effort than a mouse
(4) Arrow keys require less hand/eye coordination <link11>
(5) Arrow keys are easily learned in a minute
(6) Arrow keys are sufficient for all operations
Having built and used several hypertext systems with hypertext
jumps exceeding 200,000 links <link10>, I do not believe a mouse is
necessary or beneficial for text-based hypertext applications.
Use of mouse for browsing graphic images <link11>
Use of angle brackets to mark hypertext jumps <link13>
Types of information available for hypertext <link14>
